I am in the air 3.5 hours flying home from Minnesota where I had outlined an article saying the Winter Meetings for the Rays was a lot of talk and no action when Jon Morosi of Fox Sports is reported the Rays have a deal in place to acquire Rafael Soriano for Jesse Chavez. You might recall Chavez came when the Rays picked up Akinori Iwamura’s $4.2m option and immediately traded it to Pittsburgh. Soriano surprised the Braves when he accepted their arbitration offer after they had already inked Billy Wagner and Takashi Saito which forced the Braves to make such a move to free up the cash they need to address their hitting.
More on this tomorrow but I love this because it gives the Rays a big impact arm for closing and it does not cost them a draft pick to sign him. Where is the money going to come from? Nobody knows that yet, but I would say without hesitation Dioner Navarro has played his last game with the Rays as the club is likely going to non-tender him this weekend to help free up the cash for the Soriano acquisition given Stu Sternberg said the other day there “was no $7m laying around for a closer.” Well played Mr. Sternberg, well played.
