Around the Dock – 1/9/10

Greetings from frigid central Florida where we are currently seeing sleet outside and the temperature is a balmy 33 degrees. Here is what is in the news related to the Tampa Bay Rays:

  • DRaysBay wonders if the Rays can use Franklin Gutierrez’s new contract as a model for a possible B.J Upton extension.
  • Prospect Guru Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus published his Top 11 list for the Rays farm system. Needless to say, our system is loaded! Five 5-star prospects is something possibly only the Texas Rangers farm system can challenge. At some point, the Rays are going to have to figure out where to put all of these guys.
  • Marc Lancaster’s replacement at announces the Spring Training schedule as well as ticket pricing. 40 days until pitchers and catchers report to Port Charlotte!
  • Rayhawk Review covers the Rays’ pending arbitration decisions.
  • Vote for your favorite 2009 Rays highlight. My vote? This one.
  • Desmond Jennings, from a fantasy baseball perspective.

Thanks again to the fans of the Rice Owls Baseball program who reached out to me to correct me on some initial errors in my Jeff Niemann piece the other day and best of luck to their team this season – except when they are playing the UCF Knights =-)

  1. Bodhizefa says:

Colome and Moore as five-star guys along with the other obvious three gives me continual hope that the Rays can win against the heavyweights in the East for at least a few more years. I’m personally glad they didn’t as an M’s fan, but it sure would’ve made a lot of sense for them to have gotten in on Cliff Lee (or possibly even Halladay).

By the way, I am absolutely in love with Desmond Jennings. I’ll be curious as to what happens to his walk rate once he hits the majors, but at least he’s got more pop than other speedsters who don’t walk much due to lack of respect by the pitchers.

  2. Take a number on the Desmond Jennings mancrush. It is going to be out of control in March 🙂
