Rays Add Benoit

I mentioned back in December that Benoit was near the top of my wishlist for bullpen help for the 2010 season and today, Marc Topkin delivers the good news that the Rays have inked Benoit to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training.  Benoit missed all of the 2009 season following rotator cuff surgery on 1/28/09 which turned up after he really struggled in 2008 with Texas and became a wild man on the mound. From 2005 to 2007, he was one of the more dominating relievers in the AL as he had a 9.1 K/9 in 249 innings and gave up just 17 homers while pitching in a launching pad of a park as a slightly flyball pitcher.  The fact the Rays were able to add him with a minor league contract means he can take all of the time he needs in Durham to fully recover from the surgery he had nearly 13 months ago and possibly become a factor in the Rays’ bullpen in the second half of the season.
