On the mound David Price has lived up to, if not exceeded, all expectations. Selected by the Tampa Bay Rays with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft, the left-handed pitcher helped that franchise reach its first World Series one year later by throwing the final four outs in Game 7 of the 2008 American League Championship Series. This season Price was the AL’s first 12-game winner, helping him secure the starting pitcher role at the All-Star Game. What baseball fans might not realize is that since becoming a professional almost two years ago, life off the mound has not gone so smoothly for the Tennessee native. Two days after Price signed his first major-league contract, one of his best friends died. Eight months later, while Price was in spring training, another of his best friends died. In an exclusive interview, the Rays’ star opens up about the losses in his life and explains how he has managed to dominate on the diamond while coping with tragedy off of it. In this E:60 profile, that follows his path from the minor leagues to baseball stardom, Price also tells correspondent Michael Smith why he almost quit the game and why he once turned his $100,000 BMW into a locker.
