Before the season, many of the prognosticators had the Tampa Bay Rays picked to finish third in the American League East.
Most said the defending champion New York Yankees only got stronger by adding Curtis Granderson and Javier Vazquez, and the Boston Red Sox did the same by adding John Lackey and significantly improving their overall team defense with the additions of Adrian Beltre, Marco Scutaro and Mike Cameron. Unfortunately for both clubs, injuries arose early, and often in Boston’s case, which allowed a very healthy Rays ball club to spend 71 total days in first place so far this season.
