What Lineup Do You Use?

The Rays have faced Cliff Lee four different times this season. Here are the lineups that have been used in each game:

5/5/2010 (win):

  1. Bartlett
  2. Crawford
  3. Zobrist
  4. Longoria
  5. Pena
  6. Upton
  7. Burrell
  8. Navarro
  9. Kapler

5/16/10 (win):

  1. Bartlett
  2. Crawford
  3. Kapler
  4. Longoria
  5. Aybar
  6. Blalock
  7. Upton
  8. Navarro
  9. Rodriguez

8/16/10 (win):

  1. Upton
  2. Bartlett
  3. Crawford
  4. Longoria
  5. Pena
  6. Rodriguez
  7. Zobrist
  8. Aybar
  9. Shoppach

10/6/10 (loss):

  1. Bartlett
  2. Upton
  3. Crawford
  4. Longoria
  5. Pena
  6. Baldelli
  7. Zobrist
  8. Shoppach
  9. Rodriguez

Maddon has tried several combinations with mixed results. The Rays got a lot of good breaks to win the first three games but got zero breaks in the Game 1 loss.  I think the only thing Maddon changes is Aybar goes in for Baldelli and hits in front of Pena and Upton and Zobrist will switch spots in the lineup. The decision on whether he uses Jaso or Shoppach will likely come down to a defensive decision rather than an offensive one. What would your lineup be if Joe let you create the lineup tomorrow night?

The Rays did hit the ball pretty hard in the first two games, albeit at people, and their vs LHP lineup has worked this year. Still, I’d like to get Jaso in there:

    Bartlett SS
    Zobrist RF
    Crawford LF
    Longoria 3B
    Aybar DH
    Pena 1B
    Upton CF
    Rodriguez 2B
    Jaso C

  2. I’d probably go with something like this
    Bartlett SS
    Zobrist RF
    Crawford LF
    Longoria 3B
    Upton CF
    Aybar DH
    Pena 1B
    Rodriguez 2B
    Shoppach C

Bottom half could probably get drawn out of a hat.

  3. Rytor says:

    Upton CF
    Zobrist RF
    Crawford LF
    Longoria 3B
    Pena 1B
    Aybar DH
    Rodriguez 2B
    Shoppach C
    Bartlett SS

Best lefty hitting lineup we have (well, Jaso would be nice but I’d prefer Shoppach’s defense.) Barty hitting 9th gives the second leadoff spot, and starting Aybar in a clincher gives me memories of his game 7 homerun against Jon Lester.

Hope it’s close to this one.

    Bartlett SS
    Upton CF
    Crawford LF
    Longoria 3B
    Zobrist RF
    Johnson DH
    Peña 1B
    Rodriguez 2B
    Shoppach C

Johnson’s splits aren’t that dramatic, and they’ll need all the quality at bats they can get. Judging by the fact that Maddon chose Baldelli over Aybar for Game 1 against Lee, I think he’ll go with Johnson

  5. Good suggestions so far!

  6. Rick says:

    Jason,
I’ve got to have Jaso in there just because of his base running skills – he seems to make things happen. Shoppach doesn’t bring this and barely brings anything offensively.

  7. By the way, highly recommend you all read this link from pages 35-47.

  8. Rick – I agree on those areas but the defensive issue is tough for me to ignore. Shoppach is much better behind the plate as he is useless at it.

  9. ramedy says:

Way ahead of you on BBTN. My copy is actually within an arms length at my desk right now.

I thought about Jaso too, but defense will be at a premium in what will likely be a pretty hostile run-scoring environment. I’d imagine the only lefties available out of Rangers pen will be Wilson (probably as last resort) and Oliver, so I’m sure Jaso will get the call later in the game assuming we can force Lee off the mound eventually. A tall task, I know.

  10. Yea – Holland will be out for the game after working as much as he did this weekend. Wilson could go 2 innings but they’d want to save him to start Game 1 if they were to win.

  11. mike says:

    BJ
    Bartlett
    CC
    Longo
    Zobrist
    Rodriguez
    Pena
    Johnson (DH)
    Shoppach
