Ken Rosenthal tweets that Choate has agreed to a two year deal with the Marlins for $1.25m a season plus incentives. The Rays will get a compensation pick in between the first and second rounds of the draft since Choate was tendered an arbitration offer much like they did with Gregg Zaun last season and Joaquin Benoit earlier this off-season. Andrew Friedman has now turned two different minor league free agent pitchers into Top 60 draft picks and could get more if Brad Hawpe and Chad Qualls score major league deals this off-season.
Choate’s work over the last two seasons was undervalued by fans because his numbers were skewed by his horrific numbers against righties as he was one of the best in the game against left-handed batters. For more on that, check out PGP’s post at DRaysBay. I know the guys over at RiverAveBlues will be upset with this signing because they both wanted Choate to come back to the Yankees bullpen after watching him shut down lefties for the past two seasons.
Best of luck to you, Randy. See you in interleague play and thanks for your work here and bringing a nice draft pick in return.
