Marc Topkin had some interesting news on his blog this morning: Kyle Farnsworth can earn up to $300,000 in incentives based on games finished. According to Cot’s, no other reliever on the Rays has such a clause in their current contract. Joaquin Benoit had $500,000 in incentives in his deal last year so this is not something new to the Rays and Benoit was signed to his deal after the Rays had already traded for Rafael Soriano which leads me to believe most of Benoit’s incentives were based on games pitches and not finished due to his health history.
I hinted at this possibility earlier this month and found a silver lining in making Farnsworth the closer as the most experienced arm in the bullpen. I still believe that Jacob McGee’s swing and miss stuff is the best fit long term, but today’s contract news with Farnsworth is definitely intriguing.
