Where They Came From

Yesterday, we published the Prospect Matrix to show how the pundits ranked the Rays’ top prospects.  Today, we show where those players were drafted when they signed. Keep in mind, some players are not eligible for drafts depending on the country they come from which is represented by NFDA (non-drafted free agent) on the list below.

    Interesting. Really highlights the value of players drafted in the 5th round or earlier, along with the importance of a good international scouting department.

    Unlike basketball (which is down to 2 rounds because subsequent rounds were pointless), baseball prospects appear to come from every possible round. It would be interesting to assign some “round” number to the NDFA, and look at the correlation between ranking and round. I bet it is nearly zero.
