More Cuts

Again, none of these cuts were surprising. Despite the hot spring by Robinson Chirinos, he is still very limited above AA ball and is still somewhat inexperienced in calling a game if you listened to Maddon’s reviews of him this spring. It did not make sense for the club to carry two catchers in Jaso and Chirinos to work with this pitching staff, particularly with all of the new faces in the bullpen. Hayhurst’s demotion lines up perfectly with what Tommy Rancel said over on the ESPN 1040 Rays blog meaning that Juan Cruz, Jake McGee, Cesar Ramos, Cesar Cabral, and Cory Wade are fighting over the final three bullpen spots to help Farnsworth, Peralta, Russell, and Sonnanstine.

It is my belief that if Jake McGee was going to be sent down, it would have been done with this talented group of players meaning he has a strong chance of locking down a spot on the 25 man roster over these next ten days.  I also think Juan Cruz makes the club and Ramos comes on board as a second lefty over the Rule 5 pick Cabral. There is also the possibility that Cruz starts the season on the disabled list much like Joaquin Benoit did last year which would leave matters wide open for Cory Wade to make the club out of camp.

This certainly won’t be the last we hear of the guys that were sent to minor league camp today as a few of them should definitely have an impact on this team at some point in 2011.

Do you think, then, that we can discount Delaney as a candidate to be on the opening day roster?

    • Yes, I do. The scouting reports I’ve seen on him don’t put him on level with Wade or Cruz as RH help. I’d say he has the smallest chance of the RH relievers to make the team.

Granted I haven’t seen any scouting reports, but I like Delaney and with Wade and Cruz both coming off injuries I think they start in AAA. Delaney’s issue is the dinger and ineffectiveness, if those aren’t cured then it’s no loss and he can be thrown back to the heap giving perhaps one of those other two a chance to show the team something in Durham.
