Throughout spring training I’ll be running down my list of the top 30 Rays prospects, with the occasional weekend interlude. Check back daily to get caught up on the system with a new capsule each day.
Brandon Guyer | 6-2/210
5th round, 2007 draft (University of Virginia)
What happened in 2012? Nothing good. Things got off to a bad start when he lent Matt Bush the keys to his SUV, which he proceeded to use to drive drunk and eventually get into a hit-and-run for which he is currently serving a prison sentence for. On the field, Guyer played in a handful of major-league games and 22 games for Durham, hitting .294/.365/.459 before going on the shelf with a torn left labrum.
What needs to happen in 2013? Well, he’s entering his age-27 season so it’s put up or shut up. He’s shown he can hit at the upper levels of the minors, but whether or not he can do enough with the bat to stick in the majors is still in question as he’s just 9 for 50 in two cups of coffee in the bigs. He’ll likely be back with Durham to begin the year, but if he mashes and the Rays need some offense (or if there’s an outfield injury) he’s likely to be #1 on their speed-dial. If he falls short in 2013 it might be tough for him to get another look with prospects like Ty Morrison, Todd Glaesmann, and Mikie Mahtook rising through the system.
