The keywords for this season is stay healthy. And of course no sooner are those words out of my mouth we get news that DH Luke Scott, a big bat the Rays need to return to old form, is headed to the DL. How long? That remains to be seen. But whenever I hear a player is having an MRI it usually turns out to be more lengthy than we thought. Let’s hope not.
I’m optimistic about the season. With the addition of Yunel Escobar we have solidified the left side of the infield and James Loney at first base might be the best glove there since Carlos Pena won a gold glove way back when.
We-also have more depth than in the past. This will come into play with Scott out as we’ll probably see newly acquired Kelly Johnson as the DH more with Ryan Roberts and Sean Rodriguez playing 2B and with Rodriguez some OF.
The rotation is solid and I see no reason we can’t again lead the league in ERA. Again we so much depth there. Not only will proven starter Jeff Niemann have to start the year in the bullpen, the rotation at Durham is absolutely loaded with MLB ready arms like Chris Archer and Jake Odorizzi ready to go. The bullpen should be stellar anchored by record setter Fernando Rodney, Joel Peralta and Jake McGee, with newcomer wily old vetran Jamey Wright added. Also let’s not forget Joe Maddon when addressing the pen. His use of it is that of a fine surgeon and that’s why I think the Rays year in, year out have one of the best bullpens in the game.
We are ready to go so “Play Ball”, and as always Go Rays.
